2010 Is Off To A Flying Start!

Dear Gbackup Partners and Customers

We want to welcome all of you back from the festive break. We hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday, and we're looking forward to many exciting milestones to be reached this year!

Backup and support gets a flying start in 2010

The Gbackup team has been working hard on enhancing and customizing the new Gbackup website to create a resource that's helpful and useful to anyone who needs information in a hurry or needs detailed technical advice on how our products work.

Be sure to take a look at our new Knowledgebase section containing self-help documents and demonstrative videos to answer any questions you may have regarding online backup solutions. We'll be adding new articles on a regular basis, and if you have any suggestions for questions we could answer please email them to me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

If you've ever puzzled over documentation containing technical terms like 'AES', 'CDP', 'In-File Delta', 'Parity Backup', or 'Retention Policy', you'll love our new Glossary section. Like with the Knowledgebase, if you have any suggestions for terms you'd like explained please email them to me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

There are a few more new features we still have up our sleeves, and over the coming months as our website grows we'd love to hear feedback from our partners and customers. Together we can make this a great year!

What to expect in the coming months

At Gbackup we're always looking ahead and trying to improve the quality of our service and products using the latest technology available.

The soon-to-be-released Version 6.0 of our Gbackup application will offer resellers full control over their clients' configurations by providing a web interface to maintain, create and edit their licenses. The Beta version of this software will be released in February or March 2010, check back often for more information closer to that date.

As mentioned at the start of this newsletter several new features will be incorporated into the Gbackup website over the coming months. One feature in particular that is a high-priority task for us at the moment is the introduction of an online support and ticketing system continually monitored by our technical support team.

This feature will add another level of benefit to our partners and customers, as we hope to use this new functionality to resolve support issues much faster and more efficiently. The new support system will be introduced in the coming weeks, and you'll be notified with your login details as soon as it's up-and-running.

We wish you all a fantastic and prosperous year going forward!

Yours sincerely

The Gbackup Team

Uncapped Internet Encourages Online Backups!

With the recent release of Gmail's Uncapped ADSL Offerings (as well as those offered by other ISPs), affordability is now definitely in the cards. With an Uncapped ADSL account from as little as R199pm, online backups in South Africa are now more attractive than ever!

Bandwidth has always been a 'bone of contention' when it comes to online/offsite backups. However that 'bone' has finally been buried - just one less 'Con' and another 'Pro' for offsite backup.

Users of our online backup service will be able to save money when it comes to setup fees, since with an Uncapped ADSL line they can upload their initial data backups directly to our servers rather than relying on a technician to upload it to our data centres for them.

A viable option for larger companies is now to install a secondary Uncapped ADSL line dedicated to online backups, while their primary ADSL line is used for web browsing, email, and other activities.

Gbackup V5.5.5.0+ Released

We are proud to announce Version 5.5.5.0+ of our online backup software. This version of the Gbackup application has several new features:

  • Automated updates so you don't have to download and install new versions of the software yourself
  • NAS (Network Accessible Storage) appliance support for compatible devices and custom solutions
  • CDP (Continuous Data Protection) functionality, an exciting prospect for restaurant and POS (Point Of Sale) owners, backs up changes to your data continuously, ensuring you always have a safe and secure copy of the latest version
  • Performance and speed enhancements all-round

If your company has or would like to own an enterprise-class backup server for on-site or off-site backups but you don't want to spend a fortune, using a NAS device as the backup server can greatly reduce your total hardware costs.

Announcing Full Apple Macintosh Compatibility

Mac users will be pleased to hear that all Mac OS X versions past 10.2 ('Puma') are now fully compatible with both Gbackup for Servers and Gbackup for Computers. Additionally, all file selection issues Mac users experienced with the previous version have been fixed.

The latest Mac versions of Gbackup for Servers and Gbackup for Computers also feature automated updates, and users will benefit greatly by having their emails, documents, and other important files stored online and accessible through the Gbackup web interface at http://customers.gbackup.co.za/.

Jerome says, "One day I found my entire database corrupted, but thanks to Gbackup I didn't lose a thing!"
