'AES' or 'Advanced Encryption Standard' selected by the American National Institute of Standards and Technology after a 5 year consultation process. A number of symmetric ciphers were evaluated. The Rijndael cipher was selected to be the standard, and is now implemented in a wide range of products using encryption, including SSL servers.
